Moravians in Mission at our Sister Churches

Staten Island Moravians work together on a variety of projects (called Moravians in Mission) to meet practical needs we see in the world around us. These projects draw upon energetic volunteers from all four Moravian churches as well as non-Moravians, individuals and groups.

Moravian Community Dinners – Vanderbilt Moravian Church

The third Saturday of every month, we serve a free community dinner from 4:00 to 6:30 PM at Vanderbilt Avenue Moravian Church. In addition to sharing a meal together, all those who come to eat can choose a book or two to take home from a library of donated books. Members of all four Moravian churches participate in cooking, serving, and eating together in community with our visitors. For more information, contact Vanderbilt Avenue Moravian Church.

Thanksgiving Baskets – New Dorp Moravian Church

Our churches collect non-perishable food items all through the fall. Last year, we used these contributions to fill over 100 baskets which are given out to families in need during the Thanksgiving holiday. For more information, contact New Dorp Moravian Church.

Moravian Community Garden – Castleton Hill Moravian Church

Located on the grounds at Castleton Hill Moravian Church, the SI Moravian Community Garden has 39 garden plots and is handicap accessible. The garden provides space for volunteers to grow their own food to take home and also provides space to grow herbs and vegetables for Project Hospitality’s soup kitchen and food pantry. For more information, contact Castleton Hill Moravian Church.

Clothing Distribution – New Dorp Moravian Church

We collect clean, gently used clothing during March, April and early May. In May we sort, and box up the clothing until August when we hold a public clothing distribution at Brighton Heights Reformed Church. In 2015, we served 1,295 individuals and their families. For more information, contact New Dorp Moravian Church.
